WHERE IN THE WORLD
September 12th 2008
: LIVE at The Blue Note in Columbia, Missouri
It's been quite some time since we last played the Blue Note. I'd almost forgotten just how cool and special a place it is to gig. For those who were there, you already know who shared the stage that night. For the others reading along, there were three bands that evening. We were first, followed by Copperview, from the Saint Louis region, and topping the night off was Filament. It was their official CD release show, which made the night even more special.
During rehearsals, a couple weeks before the gig, Amy, Mat and I talked a bit on what to play at the Note. We knew it was a shorter set, so we decided to mix things up a bit. Each of us chose 4 songs, and we simply played them like mini-sets back to back. I had no idea how much I needed to break it up until we performed it all together 'live'. It felt so refreshing, plus being a 45 minute set, there's really no energy lull. Kind of one of those rare times when everything clicks and you feel in the 'zone', so to speak. No expectations, just the joy of playing music.
Now, for as much fun as we were having onstage, the real energy was with the audience. They were incredible! There were few, but they sounded as many. I saw familiar faces all about, and even some fans from Saint Louis made it in. Hanging with our friends beforehand at the little deli eatery was a great part of the dealio too. Our buddy, Jason Litton, had some great news for us, and we also got to see Christian and Joe, and their friends from somewhere far, far away like Tatooine.
Copperview blew me away! Very, very charasmatic group and super tight. The vocalist, Sam, has an energy all his own, pacing and working the stage like it's on fire. Maybe his feet are on fire, but he sure can move! At times I was thinking vocal similarities to Matchbox Twenty or 3 Doors Down, but they also have this bluesy thing which reminded me of Black Crowes or the Stones or something along those lines. They kept me on my listening toes. Don't know why I used the band references, I guess we have to start somewhere in explaining and discribing things in our world.
The night belonged to Filament, and man oh man, they deserved it! They have just released their new album, entitled "Power", and that is just what their sound is... powerful. All the tunes we heard that night had great hooks and melodies, and it was fun to get the chance to watch 'em from the front of the stage. I noticed some real tasty vocal harmonies on the new songs too, which was delightful. Byron has always been super cool to us and is one of the greatest music lovers out there. He has a great heart and passion for the art, and it really shines when they play. We had the opportunity to actually play with them for a couple tunes onstage, as Byron wanted to perform the beginning of Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon as two full bands. Wow, I was amazed that we all kept it together, but it seemed to roll smoothly and what fun we had! The crowd was super about us veering off course from the originals to honor some Floyd the best we could. To hear that Richard Wright, just two days later, would pass... man, that was heavy. I remember talking with the guys from Filament before the show about 'those funky chords at the end of the chorus on "Breathe"'. Turns out that Richard was inspired to use those jazz chords while working out the song on the piano. He can play now forever to the greatest of fans in the great gig in the sky!
